FDA and CDC Investigate Salmonella Outbreak Linked to August Egg Company Eggs

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), along with state and local health officials, are investigating a multistate outbreak of Salmonella Enteritidis infections linked to brown cage-free and brown certified organic eggs from the August Egg Company based in Hilmar, California.

So far, 79 people across seven states have become ill, with symptoms reported between February 24 and May 17, 2025. Most individuals reported eating eggs or egg-containing dishes before getting sick. Twenty-one people have been hospitalized. No deaths have been reported.

An FDA investigation traced the source of the outbreak to August Egg Company. Environmental samples collected at their processing facility tested positive for Salmonella, matching the outbreak strain.

As a safety measure, August Egg Company has stopped selling whole eggs and is now sending all eggs to a facility that processes them in a way that kills Salmonella. The company has issued a voluntary recall of all brown cage-free and brown certified organic eggs that may still be in consumers' homes.

Consumers are urged to check their refrigerators for these recalled eggs and return them to the store where purchased for a full refund. More details regarding this recall can be found on the FDA’s website by clicking here for product item name, plant number, carton UPC, and pictures of the products. In California, these eggs were sold at Save Mart, FoodMaxx, Lucky, Smart & Final, Safeway, Raleys, Food 4 Less, and Ralphs.

What you should do:

  • Do not eat any recalled eggs. Throw them away or return them to where you bought them.
  • Wash items and surfaces that may have touched the recalled eggs using hot soapy water or a dishwasher.
  • Call your healthcare provider if you have any of these severe Salmonella symptoms:
    • Diarrhea and a fever higher than 102°F
    • Diarrhea for more than 3 days that is not improving
    • Bloody diarrhea
    • So much vomiting that you cannot keep liquids down
    • Signs of dehydration, such as not peeing much, dry mouth and throat, and feeling dizzy when standing up

The FDA’s investigation is ongoing and updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
