We provide free introductory training and ongoing support. Our goal is to help you feel confident, supported, and successful while providing a meaningful volunteer experience.
What is Adult Literacy?
Adult literacy is about giving adults the skills they need to read, write, and use numbers confidently in everyday life. This can help with work, family, and personal goals. Our program offers personalized support and resources to help every learner succeed.
Statistics on Adult Literacy in the United States
- 59 million adults in the United States have literacy skills at or below Level 1, the lowest level. At this level, adults can only read very short, simple sentences - for example, identifying whether a job is day or night shift from a listing, or finding a phone number on a sign.
- $215 billion in health care costs are linked to low literacy, including more frequent emergency room visits and other preventable health expenses.
- Reaching Level 3 proficiency in literacy and numeracy significantly improves a person's economic, social, and educational outcomes.
- A mother's reading skill is the strongest predictor of her children's future academic success - more influential than factors such as neighborhood or family income.
Understanding Literacy Levels
Literacy levels describe how well adults can read, write, and use numbers in daily life. They are often measured on a scale from Level 1 (lowest) to Level 5 (highest). Here's what that means in plain terms:
- Level 1: Can read very short, simple sentences. Example: Finding a phone number on a sign or understanding a single line in a job listing.
- Level 2: Can understand slightly longer and more detailed information. Example: Reading simple instructions or short forms.
- Level 3: Can handle more complex reading and math needed for work, further education, and everyday life. Example: Reading a newspaper article or following a recipe.
- Levels 4-5: Can understand detailed and abstract texts and use numbers in complex situations, like analyzing reports or understanding legal documents.
Why Adult Literacy Matters
Most adults aim to reach Level 3, because this level allows them to succeed in work, manage everyday tasks independently, and support their family’s education.
